Yas / Whetzel “Life Is Raining” par Amélie Adamo
[English translation follows below]

Yas/Whetzel "Life Is Raining" by Amélie Adamo
[Version originale en français au dessus]

Ten years after they have first met in Seattle, James Whetzel and Yas (Paris) celebrate their transatlantic friendship with the release of “Life Is Raining,” an original spoken word album in which Yas flies over the musical road of her last ten years with wings spread wide. She chose for this collaboration her more intimate and moving texts from different times, a trip through the inner space and time of a woman’s quest for infinity. For Yas poetry has no limits, and her musical desires are plural. This time, it’s an electro hip hop album mixing different styles and cultures. India , North Africa, West Africa, Europe and North America meet in the music and offer us a sound that travels through frontiers.

As its double-meaning title: “life is raining“ (reigning), the album invites us to feel life’s reign with its perpetual movement, swinging between joy and pain, noise and silence, desire and fear. The words of Yas (english/french) confront us with fear, and an appeal to life in pulsating language which reinvents classic themes and paints surreal images. Flower in nothingness, stars in the throat, Yas speaks of light and shadow, the suspended moment, time passing, icy death, body shuddering. Strong and sincere, Yas’ profound poetry is alive and raw, it draws out the salt, the juice, the meaning, the essence of things. Her words make us feel the pace of the clock, the dance of the world and the rhythm of the seasons--sometimes they are sensual as animals or curious as kids--they cross barriers and know no taboos. An ode to love, this album is an injection of fire and desire in the sad body of a cold and murky world. It is a calming of the soul, a blaze of the heart.

James Whetzel is the unique composer and producer of “Life Is Raining.” His music is a platform where Yas’ poems resonate with force and originality. This collaboration is an act of complicity and love that is felt in the obvious harmony of the words and the music. Whetzel uses acoustic instruments, classical guitar, mandolin, accordion, tabla, percussion (def, bendir, frikyiwa, dawro) synthesizers (digital and analog) but also found sounds, where everyday objects are turned into instruments. His personality, open to many cultures, shapes his music. His palette of instruments mixes cultures and styles. And the music favors strong beats and original melodies, and avoids overly predictable chord progressions. The almost cinematic productions of Whetzel on this album give body to the words, and just like Yas, invite us for a beautiful and hot dance in a cold world.

“ Life is raining,” an electro hip hop spoken word hybrid album which hovers, dances and bewitches; opening borders and breaking down walls... A few titles to wet your appetite Trésor Chéri, Next Time, Rainbow Ice Cream, Wonder Arc en Ciel, In Your Shadow... "

Track Name: Next Time
Next time i will try again
i didnt catch the drops of rain
Next time i will try again
i didnt catch the drops of rain
on my tongue but i was thirsty

I dont listen to mon corps j’essaierais encore
I dont listen to mon corps j’essaierais encore
I forgot the rhythm
, i lost the melody

next time
tomorrow
another day
i will let go and not pray

i remember i forget
and seconds in my hands left

i hope i try and minutes of my life fly away

i dont wanna get hurt
traces
scars bruises
inner pain
i didnt catch the drops of rain

it makes me think of somone who was crazy sick he had an orange in his hand but never ate it
he kept it dry while walking durring days arriving to his destination he was about to die from starvation

I never
sometimes I
do
I never act out of the blue

then i regret then i remember
then i forget then i say next day i ll do better

next time will be easier

Next time i will try again
i didnt catch the drops of rain
Next time i will try again
i didnt catch the drops of rain
on my tongue but i was thirsty

there is no complication only obstacles to intuition

sometimes i follow my intuition i act out of passion it’s a never ending potion
never ending potion

catching life while death is here grasping the no meaning of life while death is not here yet

catching life while death is here grasping the no meaning of life while death is not here yet

sometimes i remember
sometimes i forget

No need to hope in the strangling of the rope

if a rain drop falls from the sky
if a rain drop falls from the sky

Open your mouth if you dont want to die
